CARB-IP Project

CARB-IP Project

CARB-IP (Circular Aerogel Reusable Building Insulation Products) is a European LIFE project coordinated by CRH Structural Concrete Belgium in close collaboration with Aerobel and other partners. The project’s mission is to replace non-circular, environmentally harmful insulation materials with innovative, high-performance, and fully circular alternatives designed for disassembly.

Within CARB-IP, Aerobel has developed a novel aerogel-incorporated fibre that significantly improves thermal insulation performance. This innovation not only reduces energy loss but also positions Aerobel’s solution as a superior alternative in the construction insulation market.

Project goals include:

- Creating high-performance, circular insulation materials based on aerogel composites.Integrating recycled raw materials such as cellulose fibres, mineral fibres, silica-rich waste, and EPS waste streams.
- Demonstrating new Insulated Double Wall (IDW) products using Aerobel’s aerogel-based insulation.
- Building a demo plant for large-scale production in Bilzen, Belgium.

CARB-IP Partners:

CRH Structural Concrete Belgium (CRH SCB)
– Project coordinator, responsible for demonstration and prototype development of the new IDW elements.

Aerobel – Technology partner developing the aerogel-incorporated insulation fibres and composites.

CRH Nederland BV – Managing dissemination, exploitation, and sustainability activities.

Supported by the EU LIFE Programme, CARB-IP demonstrates how innovative circular insulation solutions can combine top-tier performance with true sustainability.
